There are variations in this shrub, it has dark green leaves that can be small or large, the branches may or may not have spikes with coastal forms known for being quite tall. This species is fairly hardy and easy to grow in full sun to part shade and will tolerate dry conditions, light frost and some salt spray. Annual pruning will prevent it becoming leggy and sparse, it is great for attracting birds, butterflies and insects. It also be used to assist in erosion control as the fibrous roots bind the soil.
