An open to dense shrub with smooth bark and grey/green branchlets that grows to 3 metres. The ribs on the branchlets are grooved. Furrows densely downy. The plants are male and/or female. The brown male flowers are spikes of 1-4cm long at the end of branchlets, whilst the red female flowers occur along the branchlets. This shrub grows in moist to wet clay and sandy soil in full sun. It is commonly used as a dense screen plant in poorly drained positions and for bird habitat.
