A tall tufted grass with flower stems to 1.2 metres tall. This grass has dense fluffy seed heads, the seeds are purplish or green, becoming reddish brown and covered in golden or white hairs from September to December. The large seed heads make this an attractive garden plant, it is also a food source for seed eating birds and attracts butterflies. It grows in moist to dry soils, in full sun to part shade and is frost tolerant.
