A green tree fern-like plant that grows up to three metres tall with arching shiny leathery fronds. This fern has a barrel-shaped trunk covered in brown to black fibrous aerial roots, old plants develop multi-crowned trunks rarely more than a metre tall. It grows best in moist to wet organic soils in dappled sun to full sahde and tolerates waterlogging. A slow growing, long lived fern, requiring constant moisture, it is best planted beside shaded pools and in fern gardens.
